For On-line Students

The first week was somewhat chaotic as we were trying to work out visits to the internet cafe, classes and our general schedule and abilities, given all the limitations in Guinea. We still haven't worked everything out, but we have a better idea of what is possible. We are trying to get wireless internet in our house, and if we can the blog will work much more smoothly. Otherwise, we have to travel to one of the internet cafes, and it is something of a production. The service is not wholly reliable, and our time is limited to about an hour, so we can't always post everything we'd like. Hopefully that will change this week.

In the meantime, thanks for your postings to the blog. I hope we can keep communicating that way. On Tuesday evening, the group will get together to discuss the first two chapters of the Music in West Africa book. We will keep track of what we discuss and post it to the blog at the first opportunity. If you have any questions or observations about the chapters, please post them on Monday or Tuesday morning -- if we can get to the internet we can incorporate them into our discussions (no promises, but I will see your questions and observations eventually).

In the meantime, please read the articles posted on Blackboard pertaining to community. You should read the Wilkinson and Bellah articles for the first week (last week), and the Murithi and Ramose articles for the coming week. Submit your questions on the Wilkinson article as soon as you can (I have received one so far from Clay), and please try to get questions on the Murithi article in by Wednesday of this coming week. You can post your questions on the "Discussion" section of Blackboard. Follow the instructions on Blackboard under "Learning Opportunities." We will discuss the articles with the group here and address your questions, then post responses to the blog later this week (probably towards the end of the week).
