good and bad cab drivers
Yes as you can see from this Blog we have been busy. Thursday night we went to a performance with masks and costumes given by Seku Sano's company (Seku was one of our teachers for a while}Apparently Sekus company is one of four National Ballets in Guinea.I still do not speak french but I think I heard Seku describe the performance as a presentation of different Masks Rythyms and dances from the different cultures and regions of Guinea. I think I do not understand the social role that masked dances play.{they are stunning to watch.]I do not understand the social role that masks play, but they appear in unexpected places. (on the money for example} Yet annother sign that this really is an independent! African! country! The thing that I wanted to talk about is the cabs.Today one drivergot us smoothly across town, did not get lost, and went fast(while maneuvering around things ) .He was never honked at.I remeber thinking as we were going along"wow what a great driver"We then arived at the Dunungbe and I saw a drummer I had not seen before{he apparently plays for one of the other national ballets my main thought was "wow what a great drummer" The ride home was absolutely miserable 1. it was rush hour.2.the cab driver made mistakes, got lost, almost got into wrecks and was constantly honked at. Was he tired? having a bad day ?or is rush hour always painful? I do not Know !things are complicated here. Later I was talking to somebody at the compound about masks and he said"1.They are secret 2.They are African 3. and that Idid not possess the power to understand them. How could I" I do not know! Things are complicated here!
