I have listened to the C.D. that his with the book "Music in West Africa". Enjoyed tracks 4 and 10, thought they had close to a "modern"; and thought the others were very traditional but had no meaning to me. How have you found their music transcends their society; what meaning does their music provide for them? Hot in Mississippi too, but I would guess the seet Tea is a liiiitle better than what you are getting. Travel safe

  1. I find that music is a large part of the society. It seems to be incorporated into many major events such as weddings, rites of passage, even during down time. The contex of the music determines its meaning. In class I have learned traditional rhythms that celebrate independance, celebrate a group of people, celebrate wedding, and one used for seduction. In the clubs I have heard songs talking about peace, livibg a good life, even winning soccer games. In that sense I think music hear is similar to some American music. However I do feel it is more integrated into the society. Its almost like people live and breathe music.
